Hi friends! Writing this from my cozy room with peppermint hot chocolate and a purring cat beside me. It’s Sunday morning; my favorite day and time of the week. Although lately, Sunday mornings have been “heavier” than usual. The running to-do list of tasks that didn’t get completed during the week. The “healthy” meal prepping because Lord knows I can’t take any more sweets. The signing up for workout classes that I may skip, but at least I signed up for… not to mention establishing a solid sleep schedule, maintaining a successful skincare routine in the midst of the changing seasons, Christmas shopping and wrapping, spending quality time with family and friends – you get it. I don’t say this all to complain, more-so say it because I know I’m not alone. If I am alone, pass me all the therapy sessions, margaritas, and chips & salsa!
“Just Do The Next Right Thing.” This piece of advice from my wonderful Aunt Kimberly has got to be some of the most wise, yet simple pieces of advice I’ve ever heard. Just a few weeks ago, I walked into Monday night yoga class. Even though my cute matching pink set and ice cold water bottle made me look put together, I’ll be the first to admit that I was on the brink of tears throughout every pose. After class, I told my Aunt all that was going on in my silly little head. Told her that the day was sucky and that I was frustrated I couldn’t be more positive and optimistic. She said to me, “Honey, Just Do The Next Right Thing.”
This one single sentence applies to everything in life. Feeling overwhelmed with school? Just start one assignment. Too exhausted to workout? That’s okay, just stretch on the floor of your room instead. Overthinking again? Sit with those thoughts, although uncomfortable, and take some long, deep breaths. (I totally sound like a cheesy life coach!) Point being, the world can feel really weighted at times. The holidays can be a lot, maintaining priorities can be a lot, doing everything “right” can be a lot. This is your reminder to eliminate the expectations you had for yourself today and to cut yourself some slack for the week ahead. Nothing in life is all or nothing… Navigating the next single step is what’s right.
All my love, Grace.
